VIPD Honors Officers of the Month

Mary Gleason, Hotel and Tourism Chairperson Marc Langervin, St. John Deputy Chief Darren Foy, Officer Richard Dominquez and his K-9 partner Ares, and Lt. Lorraine Evans.

The V.I. Police Department hosted an Officer of the Month ceremony Wednesday, July 28, on St. Thomas.

Six St. Thomas and St. John officers were selected for the months of March, April and May for their achievements in the particular months. Also, one officer was selected for the month of June.

Supervisors heaped praises on the selected officers, who were voted the best in the monthly selections. The officers received certificates, weekend hotel stays and other giveaways from the Hotel and Tourism Association and the VIPD.
St. John Officers Honored

Officer Richard Dominguez was chosen as one of the officers of the month for March. He is the only K-9 officer who lives on St. John and is assigned to St. John. He and his partner Ares, a German Sheppard, recently conducted a CanineTraining session for St. John officers. The training familiarized the officers on the ways canines can be utilized to retrieve and locate persons or other items.

Annual Bar Wars Raises Funds for ACC

The 10th Annual Bar Wars competition at the Beach Bar on Saturday, July 31, raised much needed funds for the St. John Animal Care Center.

Bar owners Cat and Allan MacPhee continued their efforts to support the struggling shelter by hosting an event which included several teams completing an obstacle course on the sandy waterfront at the Beach Bar in Cruz Bay.

Local Production Company Films at Mongoose Junction

St. John film director Eric Zucker led a commercial shoot for the V.I. Department of Tourism last week at several locations on St. Thomas and Love City. Zucker’s Telltale Pictures production company team shot the commercial over six days, including one day at Sundog Cafe in Mongoose Junction where actors enjoyed a mouth-watering lunch on a beautifully sunlit afternoon.

 
August 10 is Last Day To Register To Vote In September Primary Elections

Coral Bay Community Council officials hung a banner, above, announcing the location and dates for citizens to register to vote in the territory’s September 11 primary elections.

The Elections System of the Virgin Islands’ St. John office is located right near the Cruz Bay roundabout and will be open Tuesday, August 10, to register residents to vote in the upcoming primary. The office will not accept any registrations between August 11 and September 11.

Rotary Club of St. John members welcomed Northern Caribbean District Governor

Rotary Club of St. John members welcomed Northern Caribbean District Governor Diana White to their Friday, July 30, meeting at the Westin Resort and Villas. White was on hand to swear in new officers, (L to R): Bob Schlessinger, vice president; John Fuller, board member; Bruce Munro, president, president-elect and secretary; Diana White and Sharon Coldren, board member. Rotary members welcomed White, the district's first female governor, in her first official visit with the club. White detailed new Rotary International initiatives for the coming year, including making all clubs in the district "bigger, better and bolder."

DPNR Office Moves Next To Sprauve Library

Department of Planning and Natural Resources' St. John office moved out of The Marketplace more than a month ago, but still can't be reached by phone. The department is now operating out of the old Head Start building, above, located across from the Elaine I. Sprauve Library, but the office has not had an operating phone since it relocated. With no phone or internet service, the only way to contact DPNR officials on St. John is in person and officials are often in the field.
